Rumble in the Rockies - January 26, 2024

Introduction

This competition was a signature event. This means that certain awards will qualify for worlds. At this signature event, the awards that qualified for worlds were high school and middle school excellence and tournament champions. Our biggest hope for this competition was to get a spot for the world championship which meant we would have to get one of the awards mentioned above. At the event, there were 86 teams. To have matches go faster, they split the teams into two divisions. These were named Wasatch and Oquirrh. This meant there were 43 teams in each division, allowing each team to have one practice match and nine qualification matches.

Evaluation

We arrived early on the first day of the competition allowing us to figure out where our pits would be, where matches would take place, and where skills would be. Shortly after arrival, they opened inspection and so we headed over to get in line. After we passed inspection, we went to one of the practice fields and tuned our match and skills autonomous.

Practice #9

This was our first match of the day and it wouldn’t count towards our rankings. In this match, we were allianced with 95888A. Looking at our match schedule we were with them qualification #63. Their robot was an X-drive. Going into this match we were focused on accomplishing two main things. First, we wanted to try a newer strategy to us called bowling. In this strategy, we would set one tri-ball in our intake and set multiple tri-balls off the back of the robot. This allowed us to have control over where the tri-ball would end up on the other side of the field. Second, we wanted to test our side elevation. We finished this elevation on the morning of the competition and tested it but hadn’t had the chance to do it in a match.

We lost auton because our teammate’s robot crossed into the opposing’s sides offensive zone. Using our newer strategy and our side elevation, we won the match 142-15.

Qualification #9

This was the first of our qualification matches. We were allied with 80804B. Their robot was a double flywheel and a tank drive.

We won auton and got the autonomous winpoint. In this match, we continued to use the bowling strategy mentioned in Practice #9. At the end of the match, we attempted to elevate but were barely touching the ground with our wheels. However, we still won the match 97-49.

Qualification #21

Going into this match, we knew we would have to perform well because we would be going against 2131R, a team from Davis High School, who performs highly at local competitions. Our alliance partner for this match would be another team from Utah, however they were from Weber High School. Their robot was an X-drive, had an elevated flywheel, an arm to grab tri-balls, and their elevated flywheel also helped them have an A-tier elevation on the horizontal bar.

We won auton and got the autonomous winpoint. It was a back-and-forth match but in the end, we elevated as well as our alliance partner to get a double park which allowed us to win the match 90-57.

Qualification #30

In the qualifier, we were with 15486E. They had a tank drive flywheel that doubled as a blocker. We were going against 98548G and 2131Y, two teams we regularly compete against at local competitions. We knew this would probably be a fairly close match and it was.

We got the autonomous win point but didn’t win the autonomous bonus. Our strategy was to one ball and bowl the whole match and it ended up working out because we won the match by one tri-ball with a score of 86-81.

Qualifier #38

In this match, we were allianced with 1771A. Their robot was a four-wheel drive and motor-controlled wings.

We lost autonomous and also did not get the win point. We went on to lose the match 89-159.

Qualifier #46

This match we were allied with 315N. Their robot had an intake, wings, six-wheel drive, and a C-tier park.

We won autonomous but didn’t get the win point because our inertial sensor didn’t calibrate correctly and our auton did not work. We went on to win the match 120-69 using the one-ball strategy.

Qualifier #54

This match would be a difficult one because we would be going against the former world champions. We were with 9776C and their robot was a six-wheel drive with an intake and puncher.

We won autonomous and got the autonomous win point. We used the strategy of one-balling which worked very well but in the end, we lost the match 55-67, because we missed our park.

Qualification #63

In this qualifier, we ended up being allianced with the same alliance partner that we had in our practice match. That team was 95888A and they were an x-drive robot.

Before the match, we talked to our alliance partner about the autonomous period, this was because during the practice match, they crossed onto the opposite side of the field and did not score the alliance tri-ball. This time they didn’t cross onto the opposite side of the field and they scored the alliance tri-ball. This helped our alliance win autonomous and get the autonomous win point. We then continued to use our strategy of one-balling and bowling and won the match 123-58.

Qualification #80

For this match, we were allied with 1168A. Their robot had wings, an intake, and a puncher on a lift that got at least an A-tier park. We won autonomous and got the autonomous win point. We won the match 118-67. For the match, we played very defensively trying to not let the other team score. We used the bowling/one-ball strategy to score.

Qualification #92

In this match, our alliance partner was 83757A. Their robot had an intake. We won autonomous but didn’t get the autonomous win point since our alliance partner didn’t have an auton. Our strategy for this match was to score all the tri-balls on our side and then stop the other team from scoring. We won this match 78-57.
